Selous Game Reserve & Mikumi National Park
Discover the hidden gems of southern Tanzania with our 4-day and 5-day Mikumi and Selous safari packages.

Tour Overview
Explore the southern safari circuit of Tanzania with this 4-day adventure that combines the game-rich plains of Mikumi National Park with the wild and untouched beauty of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). This short yet immersive tour is perfect for travelers seeking a less crowded and authentic wildlife experience, offering thrilling game drives, boat safaris, and rich scenery.
Mikumi National Park
Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam, you’ll meet your friendly Esikar safari guide and begin the scenic drive to Mikumi. Along the way, you’ll pass bustling towns, farmlands, and the rolling Uluguru Mountains. Once inside the park, settle into your lodge or tented camp and enjoy your first afternoon game drive. Mikumi is often compared to the Serengeti because of its wide, open plains and excellent wildlife visibility. You may spot giraffes standing tall above the grass, elephants roaming the miombo woodlands, or lions lounging in the shade.
Game Drive – Transfer to Selous
Rise early for a morning game drive in Mikumi, when animals are most active. This is the best time to catch predators on the move or large herds grazing under the golden morning light. After breakfast, you’ll leave Mikumi and drive south into the wilder and more remote Selous Game Reserve. This part of the journey is an adventure in itself, taking you through remote Tanzanian countryside. On arrival in Selous, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the peaceful setting near the Rufiji River.
Selous – Game Drive & Boat Safari
Today you’ll explore one of Africa’s largest protected areas. Selous offers dramatic scenery, winding rivers, and a rich diversity of animals including hippos, crocodiles, elephants, wild dogs, and over 400 bird species. Start with a game drive across the park’s rugged tracks before enjoying a peaceful boat safari in the afternoon. Cruising the Rufiji River, you’ll see wildlife from a unique angle—hippos bubbling in the water, crocodiles sunning on the riverbanks, and kingfishers darting through the air.
Walking Safari – Return to Dar es Salaam
Start your final day with a guided walking safari—one of the most thrilling ways to experience the African bush. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you’ll walk through the wilderness, learning about animal tracks, bird calls, and native plants. After breakfast, you’ll drive back to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the late afternoon, where your safari ends with memories of two of Tanzania’s most diverse parks.
Departure Day
On your departure day, Esikar Tour and Safaris organizes a timely transfer from your lodge to Airport. Reflect on your unforgettable safari as you bid farewell to the enchanting landscapes and wildlife of Tanzania.

The park is part of a vast ecosystem connected to the Selous, and its Mkata Floodplain offers the chance to spot large herds and rare antelope species like eland and sable. You’ll explore different sections of the park, enjoy a picnic lunch in the wild, and end the day with incredible views of the African sunset. Birdwatchers will be delighted with over 400 species recorded in the park.
Scenic Drive to Selous Game Reserve
After breakfast, you’ll head off on the overland route to Selous. This scenic journey takes you into the less-traveled southern circuit, through forested hills and river valleys. Upon entering the reserve, the landscape changes dramatically—here the wilderness feels deeper and more remote. Arriving in the afternoon, you’ll check into your lodge and enjoy a relaxing evening near the Rufiji River, preparing for two days of pure safari bliss.
Game Drive and Boat Safari in Selous
Today is filled with adventure. Begin with a morning game drive into Selous’s varied habitats—woodlands, lakes, and riverbanks—all teeming with life. You might spot elephants splashing near waterholes, packs of wild dogs on the move, or lions stalking through the grass. In the afternoon, glide down the Rufiji River on a boat safari. This tranquil experience reveals the aquatic side of the safari, offering close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, and water birds, all while enjoying the soft light of sunset.
